Book 1 - Prince of Wolves - Chapter 3

Chapter 3

The next morning, we find Jacque up before anyone else.  She is doing what she can to keep a grip on things, trying to figure out why she is so nervous about meeting the new guy – other than that pesky voice in her head thing. Something inside is telling her that her life has changed in a big way because of this new guy. I am not sure I would call the foreshadowing as much as a big “well duh”, because her life will never be the same – but still it a clue to the first time reader that soon nothing will be as it was.

After her shower, Jacque finds her to friends waking up. During some fun banter between Jacque and Jen, we learn that Sally is the one that keeps the peace around there, and keeps them on track.

While Jen and Sally get dressed, Jacque sets out to find her mom and get their plan in motion. This is when we are introduced to Lilly Pierce, who is cooking up a true southern dinner to take over to the new guy, and providing a perfect in for our 3 curious ladies.

Lilly is suspicious of the offer to help, but she had planned on asking them for help anyway. However, Lilly cannot just go without questioning the girl’s motives a little, so she tries to find out if the sudden urge to meet the new guy is because of Trent. Trent is Jacque’s ex-boyfriend.  Apparently they went together for several years, and although everything seemed to be fine. About two months prior to the beginning of our story, he just broke it off one day without really explaining why. Jacque ends that line of thinking right there and we move on to getting ready to go. As prep goes underway, Jacque senses that her mother is worried – but she is unsure about what.  This is your first clue that Lilly “knows” something.

Finally everyone is ready and they head over to the Henrys’

My Thoughts:

By now, we have determined that a lot of internal dialog takes place.  This is one of my favorite things about this series, the dialog, both internal and between the characters. It isn’t just the girls who have this fabulous banter between each other; they have it with everyone they come around.

I find it a little frustrating that we are told that Lilly has “feelings” about things, and throughout the book she “knows” things – but we never really find out why that is. Maybe it is just really strong intuition? I’m hoping to find out in a different book.

When we first are introduced to Trent, I expected him to show up later in the book, possibly breaking up with her because he knew something she didn’t. As we learn about Lucas, I was thinking he might be a part of that pack and found out his Alpha had laid claim. After reading the book, I tend to lean more on he was a guy.

Favorite Points:

Lilly knows something. At this point I was thinking it was possible that she was a werewolf and just hadn't told Jacque. I also considered the fact that maybe she just felt that something was going to take place between this young man and her daughter and was concerned about how that would turn out. Definitely not expecting what was actually going on in her mind.

Favorite Lines:

This chapter actually has several lines that I really enjoyed, so I just picked a few

        …it was summer in south Texas, after all, which basically meant frying eggs-on-the-side-walk hot (having lived in many parts of Texas, I can personally relate to this statement)
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        “Thanks to you, Jen, I will probably introduce myself to him by calling him hottie.”
        “Well if you do, I will be sure to do you the honor of laughing my ass off.” Jen said graciously.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        Oh, well. Could be worse. She could be hearing voices…oh wait, she was. Well, crap.

  • Jacque feels that her life may never be the same
  • Jacque is sarcastic
  • Jen can be just as sarcastic as Jacque

Book 1 - Prince of Wolves - Chapter 2

Chapter 2

 Basically this starts out as chapter 1 from the male’s perspective. Fane is in his limo feeling unsettled. He made the choice to come to the US because of something telling him to do so, but that knowledge does not help him to be too overly confident about it at first.

After his pep talk to himself, he gets out and speaks to the limo driver, Sorin, who actually escorted Fane all the way from home. Sorin has been Fane’s guard since Fane was a child and is not extremely keen on the idea of leaving his charge alone in a strange country.

As Sorin is saying his good-byes to Fane, Fane hears Jacque in his mind. This causes him to bring his wolf forward in what they call “phasing” so he can see where the though originated from. He searches her mind for her name and reaches out to her. He realizes he is heard due to the look that crosses Jacque’s face.

Fane realizes that this has to be his mate, and for the first time finds out what it is like to be out of sync with his wolf. Fane realizes that he has to go about meeting her in proper fashion whereas the wolf wants to go right then and there and claim her. Gaining control over his wolf, he goes to knock on the door, reaching out one last time to Jacque by saying “Soon.”

After the meet-and-greet is over, the Henrys show Fane to his room (which Fane considers his “territory” – which is a wolf thing). He gets settled in and calls it a night.

 My Thoughts:

There is a lot of information packed into this chapter. In just a few pages we learn quite a bit about werewolves, and some about the Henrys.

Favorite Points:

 When Sorin hugged Fane, it was a way to comfort him as well as show love because touch is extremely important to wolves.

A werewolf does not change from one form to the other, they “phase”. Changing implies that they are two separate entities entirely, wolf is wolf, and man is man. In fact, they come together with their talents and help each other out.

 Favorite Lines:

       His wolf growled possessively, and he took several deep breaths to keep from phasing. (No, not necessarily a funny line, but it brings a great picture to mind of the internal struggle that was taking place)

Things We Learned:

  • Fane is the name of the foreign exchange student
  • Fane is about to be a senior in high school
  • Fane belongs to a family of werewolves, Grey wolves (Canius Lupis)
  • As we are told Fane belongs to “specifically Grey wolves” we learn there must be more than one type of werewolf (confirmed a few paragraphs down with the wording “all the breeds of wolves”
  • Fane is the son of the Pack’s Alpha and is the Prince of the Romanian Greys
  • Fane Lupei means “Crown Wolf”
  • Fane chose to be a foreign exchange student because he “felt a pull, like a moth to a flame, to come the US” – specifically Coldspring, Texas
  • Canis Lupis hold territories all over the world
  • Wolves are extremely territorial
  • No wolves have a territorial claim registered on Coldspring
  • Sorin is the “Guard to the Prince”
  • Fane is 6’2
  • Sorin is 5’9 (5 inches shorter than Fane)
  • Wolves take comfort in touch
  • A Grey wolf has good eyesight, but their hearing is better
  • A Grey wolf has the best night vision of all the breeds of wolves
  • Jacque has emerald green eyes
  • Grey wolves can only hear the thoughts of their mate
  • Male wolves are possessive
  • A wolf’s mate carries a certain scent that only he would recognize
  • Mates can “feel” each other through their mental bond
  • Female mates to Alphas are also Alphas – they also called “Luna” because like the moon, they have a pull over many things
  • Wolves think of areas as “territories” i.e. Fane’s room is his territory

Book 1 - Prince of Wolves - Chapter 1

Chapter 1

We are introduced to our first character, Jacque Pierce. She is 17 years old, and lives in a very small town. Having spent some time as a teenager in a small town, I sympathize with her need for adventure… so much so that she has spent the last hour watching her next-door neighbor’s, house to see what the new foreign exchange student might look like.

The foreign exchange student finally shows up, in a limo no less. He is apparently the best looking guy Jacque has ever seen, but what truly blows her mind is when she hears him, or what she assumes is him, in her mind saying “At last, my Jacquelyn.” While still recovering from this shock she watches him start to enter only to hear him say “Soon.”.

Naturally, she calls her 2 best friends, Jennifer and Sally and the adventure truly begins as she tells them blow-by-blow details of everything that occurred.

My Thoughts:

 You get a sense that regardless of the direction of the story, these three girls are going to be thick as thieves until the end. The friendship is obviously deep, and the type you want to have when you are having your “crazy” moments.

Favorite Points:

When Jacque tells the girls she heard someone in her head, hot chocolate became a necessity.  This sets a precedent throughout the books as hot chocolate becomes the beverage of choice during many deep conversations and bonding moments.

Favorite Lines:

        “When you say gorgeous,” Jen started, “are we talking Brad Pitt boyish good looks, or Johnny Depp make ya want to slap somebody?”
        “No, we’re talking Brad and Johnny need to bow down and recognize,” Jacque answered.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        “No, sweetie. You’ve been gone a long time now, we just didn’t want you to know that we knew,” Sally said with humor.
Things We Learned:
  • The girls live in a town of 700
  • Jacque was raised by her mom and didn’t know her dad
  • Jacque’s mom isn’t always “in touch with reality”.
  • Jacque lives across the street from the Henrys
  • Jacque is 17 and about to be a senior in high school
  • The foreign exchange student probably comes from money
  • The foreign exchange student has blue eyes that can glow
  • The girls plan to go with Jacque’s mom when she delivers the “southern dinner” in order to meet him
  • Hot chocolate is important in serious discussions
And so it begins...
I love vampires, have since I was a little girl. I always cheer for them, and I was definitely Team Edward. Now, thanks to a series by Quinn Loftis, I am a Grey Wolves fan! Her Grey Wolves series is one of the most entertaining series I've had the pleasure to read. The dialog is quick and witty. I devoured the 4 books that are currently available in 3 days, and then proceeded to reread the last 2 again, followed by reading the entire series yet again.  To say I'm an addict would be an understatement. So, I've decided that I'm going to break these books down and point out how I feel about them.
So basically, this blog is a place for me to work through my addiction.
